Before

Djalgala delves deeply into research on the local Aboriginal area and the rich history of your school. Working closely with the school community, we intricately weave together elements that resonate with the local Aboriginal land, Country, and the unique history and values of the school.

HOW THE MURAL’S ARE DESIGNED

Djalgala meticulously prepares the mural area with the chosen design. Then, the entire school community, including students, teachers, and staff, contributes to the mural, adding intricate details to breathe life into the artwork.

Each mural is accompanied by narratives that delve into the significance of the paint design, providing insights into the stories and symbolism depicted. The school receives a copy of these narratives, fostering an environment where all students are encouraged to understand the meaning behind the mural and the stories it conveys.

    • The mural pays homage to the Bidjigal and Gadigal people

    • The centre eel represents a totem animal of the local area

    • The wattles in bloom represent the running of the eels a time of ceremony and unity

    • Centre symbol is a meeting place, this represents the community

    • The seven 'U' shapes around the meeting place are traditional symbols for people, in this painting they represent the seven-year groups within the school

    • The five blue lines surrounding the central meeting place represent these five waterways in the local area. These water areas include George's rivers, Cooks River, Salt Pan Creek, Wolli Creek, and parts of the Hawkesbury River

    • A dilly bag and fishing spears can be seen as fish were the most common food source

    • A coolamon and clapsticks can be seen as they are culturally significant as they are ceremonial pieces

    • The returning boomerang viewed is one of the artefacts used by children as a toy. This is significant to the painting as it was created for the students to connect with

    • The mural integrates the influences of Sisters of St Joseph and Sisters of Mercy with a teal background for the Sisters of Mercy and turquoise circles (which can be seen behind the artefacts) representing St. Joseph's

    • The red and green circles with white dots connected by a black line symbolise different year groups of students on their learning journey from kindergarten to year six

    • The colours red, green, and white used for these circles were chosen to represent St. Finbars' school uniform

    • At the top of the mural, stars can be viewed shining brightly. This is aligned with the school's mission to nurture, empower, and shine, along with the school motto 'Shine on the world like bright stars'
