2 Immersive programs FOR early education

The Gurung-Young Child and Dabura-Paint programs are captivating and interactive cultural immersion experiences led by a First Nations person. These engaging programs offer a valuable opportunity to support the identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and enhance the knowledge of non-Indigenous children about the rich heritage of the first peoples of this country, with the world's oldest continuous living cultures.

Aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework, our programs empower educators to build upon children's understanding of diversity, particularly regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. We are committed to creating a safe space that fosters understanding and respect towards cultural diversity for all children.

The Gurung program presents a distinctive 50-minute cultural immersion experience focused on the significance of connection through ceremonies and cultural discussions. Together, educators and children participate in an Acknowledgement of Country and ochre paint ups, followed by a Sweeping Ceremony, a cleansing ritual for the space and participants.

Interactive learning takes center stage, as children engage in hands-on exploration and study of ceremonial artefacts. The program winds up with a concentration game called Sar Sar, originating from the Torres Strait Islands. This unique cultural experience provides a profound understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal heritage, fostering unity and respect within the school community.

    • The Gurung program is designed for children aged 3-6 years.

    • Maximum 25 children per Gurung program/class.

    • Classes with more than 25 children will require two Gurung programs/class times, with an additional charge applicable.

    • If two programs are needed, they must be completed within the same day, in consecutive 50-minute blocks.

Paint (Dharug)

The Dabura program provides an immersive and engaging 1.5-hour experience, delving deep into Aboriginal art and culture. Through interactive sessions, children explore the significance of ceremonies, engage in cultural discussions, and enjoy hands-on learning with artefacts. Just like the Gurung program, the Dabura program begins with an Acknowledgement of Country and ochre paint ups for educators and children, followed by a Sweeping Ceremony, a cleansing ritual for the space and participants.

Beyond learning about Aboriginal art and symbols, students actively participate in a collective school community painting, representing the values of Country, community, and their school. Additionally, they have the opportunity to create their own individual story stones, adding a meaningful aspect to this comprehensive program. The Dabura program offers a holistic and enriching experience, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal culture and heritage.
